I love cozy game nights with friends, so last month I bought the 'Rise of the Phoenix' expansion for a fantasy game I already own. Cost me $60 and I was so excited to add new mechanics and characters. But when we tried it out, the rules were way too complicated and it took three hours just to set up. Nobody wanted to play it again after that mess, so now it sits on my shelf collecting dust. Has anyone else bought an expansion or DLC that totally flopped for your group?
I signed up for that Mubi service last month because all the artsy film people online raved about it. Thought I'd finally watch some classic foreign films and feel smart about it. Turns out I just scrolled past everything because the subtitles felt like work after a long day. I think I put on one French movie for ten minutes before I fell asleep. Ended up just rewatching The Office on Netflix like always. Anyone else fall for a fancy streaming service they barely touched?
I was halfway through slicing carrots for a stew when the blade just stopped spinning and smoke started pouring out, so now I'm trying to decide between spending $80 on a new one or going back to chopping by hand like I did in college.
Signed up for that Paramount Plus, Showtime, and BET Plus bundle last month thinking I'd finally watch Yellowjackets. Got through 4 episodes, got bored, and forgot to cancel for 3 weeks. Wasted 30 bucks on a service I used maybe 5 times total. Anyone else get tricked by these bundle deals?
I saw someone say the new Zelda title was a 10/10 masterpiece and talked about how the combat system was flawless. But I played it for around 8 hours last weekend and found the enemy variety super repetitive, like fighting the same 3 dudes over and over. The open world felt empty to me compared to older games in the series. Am I missing something or did anyone else find the hype a bit overblown on this one?
Last Tuesday I sat down to watch a new horror movie people were talking about. Turned it off after 20 minutes because the acting was so flat it put me to sleep. Next night I tried a comedy that had good reviews, but the jokes fell flat by the second scene. By Friday I gave up and rewatched an old favorite just to get the bad taste out. Anyone else ever hit a streak of duds like that and just have to step back for a few days?
I threw a lo-fi instrumental on SoundCloud at midnight just to test my new microphone and somehow it crossed 100 plays before I even woke up, which got me thinking about how algorithms just randomly pick stuff up sometimes.
I was telling my friend Dave about how I skip most horror movies because they feel so mean spirited. He just looked at me and said 'you're watching the wrong ones, try something like The Others or The Orphanage.' I gave The Others a shot last weekend and it totally clicked. It was creepy but not cruel, you know? Has anyone else found horror that feels more cozy than scary?
I didn't realize I was that close to a round number until last night, and now I feel like I need to pad it to 300 before December just to make it feel intentional. Has anyone else gotten weirdly fixated on a milestone like that without meaning to?
I spent 3 days trying to fix a dip in a living room floor last January in Portland. The bag said 4 hours to cure but it was still soft after 12 because my space heater couldn't keep the room above 50 degrees. Ended up scrapping the whole thing and starting over with a fast-set compound that actually worked at lower temps. Has anyone else had self-leveler fail on them because of cold weather?
I was parked at a local park, trying to finish rating that new wildlife show 'Winged Neighbors' on my phone. A goose just walked up, hissed at me, and started chasing me around my truck like I owed it money. I jumped in the car and locked the doors, but the thing kept pecking at my mirror for a good 10 minutes. Ended up watching the last 2 episodes with the windows up and the AC blasting. The show itself was pretty solid, I gave it a 7 out of 10 for the cinematography. Has anyone else had a wild animal interrupt their media time? Like at a drive-in or something?
My friend Mike kept telling me I was missing out by watching The Thing on my 4K monitor. He said the grain and motion blur look way more natural on a tube TV from 1998. I finally dragged his old Sony Trinitron out of his garage and hooked it up last weekend. He was right honestly, the practical effects in that 1982 scene where the dog changes shape looked a lot more grounded. Has anyone else tried watching a classic horror movie on an old CRT instead of a modern screen?
I rewatched both last month and Part I has tighter storytelling without all the jumping around in time. Does anyone else think the flashbacks actually hurt the pacing?
Everyone wanted to watch the new popular one but I pushed for the slower, older one that people keep saying is boring. We watched the older one and after 20 minutes two friends were on their phones but three of us got completely hooked. Anyone else find that the underrated movies sometimes just click better for a small group?
Last Thursday I was watching The Wire season 3 and realized I had the playback speed bumped up on my laptop just to get through the slow dialogue parts. I do it all the time with shows I say I love, but that moment hit different when I saw the characters acting their hearts out while I rushed past. Made me wonder how many movies I've actually half-watched while scrolling my phone or skipping ahead. Has anyone else caught themselves doing this and had to stop and reset your whole viewing habit?
I always gave horror game scores low marks until I put on the Silent Hill 3 OST during a calm afternoon and finally heard what it was actually doing. Took me 5 years and a random thread here to figure out I was just angry at the genre. Anybody else catch themselves doing this with certain media types?
I got 'Unraveled Threads' on Steam thinking it would be like a chill puzzle game for winding down. Three hours in, I was sweating over timeline clues and almost threw my mouse. Turns out I do not want to solve murders after work. Has anyone else tried a supposedly relaxing game that just made you anxious instead?
