Old ground beef versus fresh chicken breast, which one do you build a meal around first?
So last week I opened my fridge and found a pound of ground beef that had been in there since Tuesday, plus some chicken breasts I bought that same morning. My wife says always use the older stuff first before it goes bad, but my buddy argues that chicken goes bad faster so you should cook that first. I ended up making tacos with the beef and froze the chicken, but now I'm second-guessing myself. What's your rule for choosing which ingredient to use when you've got both old and fresh stuff staring at you?

Did I just gaslight myself into thinking beef smells like roses?

Feel you on this one. I've stood in front of the fridge doing the same exact mental gymnastics more times than I care to count. Honestly your tacos call was the right move in my book - ground beef has a shorter window once it's been sitting there a while, and chicken can usually hold on another day or two if it's still sealed up. Your buddy's point about chicken going bad faster is true for raw chicken that's been out too long, but beef starts getting that weird smell way quicker once it's opened. I've learned the hard way that if you wait too long on ground beef, you're basically playing a game of "is this safe or am I gonna regret this tomorrow?" and nobody needs that stress. Freezing the chicken was smart too, now you've got a backup meal ready whenever.
