Warning: I saw a freelancer working from a coffee shop in Austin get their laptop stolen in under 10 seconds.
It happened yesterday at a place on South Congress, and it made me completely rethink how I secure my gear when I'm out of my home office, so what's your best tip for keeping your stuff safe in public spaces?

That's a scary story, makes you realize how fast it can happen. Honestly, the best move is to never leave your stuff alone, not even for a second to grab a napkin. If you need to use the restroom, pack everything up and take it with you. It's a hassle, but less of a hassle than replacing a laptop and all your work. A cable lock can buy you a few seconds from a casual grab, but a determined thief will just cut it. What about using a laptop bag that doesn't look like it holds a computer?

I switched to a plain canvas tote bag a few years back after my old Targus bag was a clear target. @riley_price is right, a nondescript bag helps, but I also make a point to never put the laptop in the main compartment where the shape is obvious. I tuck it under a sweater or jacket inside the bag instead.

Read an article once that said thieves often look for people who act like they're carrying something valuable. The sweater trick is smart for hiding the shape.
