I finally looked up the actual number of freelancers who have a dedicated emergency fund after reading a report from the Freelancers Union.

Only 28% of us have enough saved to cover three months of expenses, which explains why a single slow client payment can feel like a total crisis.

I saw a survey saying most freelancers dip into savings at least once a year.

Yeah that number is scary but it tracks. What finally clicked for me was treating my emergency fund like a non-negotiable client. I pay it first, every single time I get paid, even if it's just a tiny amount. It's slow but it adds up. Like max330 said about dipping into savings, I used to do that constantly before I made this rule. Now that buffer means a late payment is annoying, not a total panic.

Only 28%? That's way worse than I thought.
