TIL I was using my stud finder backwards for 8 years

I was hanging a heavy mirror in my hallway last weekend and kept getting false readings, so my neighbor came over and showed me that the calibration button actually needs to be held against the wall first (not pressed in mid-air). The manual was buried in a drawer somewhere and I never read it. Has anyone else had a tool revelation this embarrassing that totally changed how you do simple projects?

Wait, are you telling me I've been doing this wrong for years too? I always just press the button in the air and wave it around the wall like some kind of wizard.

Haha nah man you're overthinking it. I've been doing it the same way for like 15 years and never had a problem. If waving it around like a wizard works, then it works. These remotes aren't exactly rocket science, they just send a signal. The whole "point it directly at the sensor" thing is just something people say to sound smart. I mean think about it, half the time I'm pointing it at the ceiling or behind my back and the TV still changes. So don't let anyone tell you your wizard method is wrong, it's probably just fine.
