Three hours to fix a loose toilet and I learned nothing

I spent last Saturday trying to stop my toilet from rocking because the floor flange was cracked. After pulling it twice and buying two different wax rings, I realized the real fix was just shimming the base and caulking around it. Has anyone else gone down a rabbit hole on a simple fix that took way longer than it should have?

Blame the first wax ring and call it a learning experience.

Learning experience is right. My first toilet install I ended up with water dripping through the ceiling into the kitchen below. Landlord was not thrilled but at least I learned why you don't overtighten the bolts.
