Talking with a carpenter at the lumber yard changed how I pick boards

Last Saturday I was at Home Depot loading up on 2x4s for a garage shelf build and this older carpenter saw me digging through the pile grabbing the cleanest ones. He laughed and said, "You're picking paint, not structure. That crown hidden in the middle will ruin your shelf." He showed me how to sight down each board for bow and twist, and I ended up swapping half of what I grabbed, maybe 8 boards total. Now I wonder, how many of my past projects have failed or looked off because I ignored stuff like that? Anyone else have a pro tip that completely changed their material selection process?
