Stop putting peel and stick tile over existing backsplash

I see it all the time in Facebook groups. People slap subway tile peel and stick right over old ceramic tile and wonder why it peels off in 3 months. The grout lines create air pockets so the adhesive never grabs right. Has anyone else had to fix this for a friend who insisted it would work?
