My neighbor in Omaha said he uses a 2x4 as a straightedge for tile work and it made me stop overthinking.
He just said, 'A level is for level, but a straight board is for straight,' and I've been using my 4-foot level for everything. Has anyone else found a simple tool that does a better job than the 'right' one?

A level is for level" is so true. I keep a cheap aluminum angle from the hardware store just for checking straight lines, it's way lighter than a level.

But @rowan972, what if the angle itself isn't perfectly straight?

Oh come on, are we building a spaceship here? If a line looks straight to the eye, it's probably fine. I mean, it's just a wall or a shelf, not a brain surgery.
