Just figured out I've been using my chisels backwards for a year

I was at my buddy's shop in Austin last weekend. He grabbed my chisel and sharpened it different. Told me I had the bevel facing the wrong way for paring cuts. Felt dumb. Been fighting every dovetail joint for 12 months because of that. Anyone else discover they were doing basic stuff wrong way too long?

Get that chisel bevel flat on the stone for a fresh angle and you'll notice the difference on the first pare cut. Dovetails get way easier when the bevel isn't fighting the direction of your push. Takes a few sharpenings to get used to the new motion but it clicks fast once muscle memory adjusts.

Honestly? I think you're overthinking this. A chisel's a chisel. I've been using mine with the factory bevel for years and my dovetails come out fine.
