Can we talk about using regular drywall screws for deck boards?
I was at a hardware store yesterday and overheard a guy tell his friend that deck screws are a waste of money, just use drywall screws they'll hold fine. I kinda wanted to jump in but kept quiet. My uncle did that on his deck 3 years ago and half the boards are already popping up. On the other hand, some people swear by it if you pre-drill and use coated ones. What's your experience? Have you seen drywall screws actually last on a deck or is it just asking for trouble?

Buddy of mine built a whole deck with drywall screws because his father-in-law swore it was fine (you know, the whole "been doing it for years" thing). They held up okay for one winter, then the heads started snapping off left and right when the wood moved.

Three winters is the magic number before shortcuts come back to bite you.
