Why does nobody rate movies with subtitles as high as dubbed versions?

Last month I watched the same French thriller twice, once dubbed and once with subtitles, and the sub version got a solid 8 from me while the dub barely scraped a 5. The dubbed voices just flattened all the quiet moments, so the acting felt weirdly flat and fake. Does the language track ever swing your rating that much, or is it just me?
