Why does everyone score a 6 hour game the same as a 60 hour one and act shocked
I watched three friends in Columbus all rate a short indie game 9/10 last month, then turn around and call a 50 hour RPG a 7 because they got bored around hour 30. Turns out people tally hours instead of fun, so a game that respects your Tuesday night gets ranked under one that eats your whole March. Do you rate by how long it lasted or how good the time actually felt while you were in it?
Why do we treat games like they owe us a certain number of hours before we're allowed to call them great? A tight 6 hour game that never wastes a second beats a 60 hour slog where I'm dragging myself through the last 20 just to say I finished it. But here's the thing, I still catch myself feeling weird when I pay 70 bucks for something short, even if every minute was amazing. Hours are easy to count, fun is not, and that's probably why people do it.
