Vent: I chose the 4K restoration over the director's cut and regret it
Last Tuesday I sat down with two versions of a 90s sci-fi film I love. One was the fancy 4K remaster with all the extra detail, the other was the director's cut with 20 extra minutes of character scenes. I picked the 4K because the picture looked incredible in the screenshots. But two hours later I realized the extra time in the director's cut is what actually makes the ending make sense. The remaster looked sharp but felt empty. Has anyone else picked the wrong version of a movie and ended up rewatching the other one the same night?
Those 90s sci-fi director's cuts often add subplots the studio hacked out for runtime, and the 4K scan usually comes from the theatrical negative since that's what was best preserved. So you're kind of comparing a pretty picture of the wrong movie to a rough print of the right one.
