The difference in horror movie scores from the 80s to now is night and day.

I rewatched The Thing from 1982 last night and the synthesizer score by Ennio Morricone felt so raw and tense, but modern horror flicks rely on those cheap jump-scare stingers that feel lazy. It seems like after the late 90s, studios started pushing for bigger orchestral sounds that drown out the quiet dread. Does anyone else miss when soundtracks let the silence do the work instead of blasting you with noise?

Do you think it's more that studios are scared audiences won't sit through quiet tension now, or that modern composers just don't know how to build it?
