My buddy at the shop changed how I watch horror movies

I was telling my friend Dave about how I skip most horror movies because they feel so mean spirited. He just looked at me and said 'you're watching the wrong ones, try something like The Others or The Orphanage.' I gave The Others a shot last weekend and it totally clicked. It was creepy but not cruel, you know? Has anyone else found horror that feels more cozy than scary?

It felt more cozy than scary" - that's exactly the niche I fell into a few years back. You want stuff that's eerie but not trying to punish you for watching. The Innocents (the old black and white one) has that same vibe, all atmosphere and creepy kids but zero gore. Also check out The Changeling from 1980, it's a slow burn ghost story that feels more like a sad mystery than a horror movie. Your buddy Dave is right, there's a whole subgenre of horror that's more about mood than shock value. Just skip anything from the last ten years with "The" and a noun in the title, those are usually the mean ones.

The Changeling is the gold standard for that kinda thing. The creepy ball bouncing down the stairs still gets me.
