Hot take: my barber in Cleveland said the original Halloween is boring, and I'm starting to agree
I've rated Halloween a 9 out of 10 for maybe 15 years, but my barber Ray brought it up while cutting my hair on Saturday and said the middle 40 minutes drag and he'd give it a 6. I pushed back at first, then rewatched it that night and honestly the pacing is rough once Laurie is just walking around town. I still think the opening is near perfect, but I'm sitting at a 7.5 now, which feels weird to type. If you've rewatched a movie you rated high for years and dropped the score, what was it and how far did it fall?
Keep it at a 9, man. That middle stretch you're calling slow is the whole point of the movie. Carpenter is letting you sit in quiet suburbia knowing Michael is out there somewhere, and that slow burn is what makes the last 20 minutes hit so hard. Plus the craft holds up, the camera work, that theme, the breathing, all of it still works better than most horror made today. Your barber might just be wired for fast scares, and that's fine, but boring isn't the right word for a movie that basically invented the playbook. Drop it to an 8 if you have to, but 7.5 feels like you let Ray talk you into a grade.
