Hot take: a guy at the Austin film club told me my 10 point scores were rude, so I switched to 5 stars
I used to rate everything out of 10 and I handed out a lot of 4s and 5s, which felt honest to me. Then a guy named Marcus at the Austin movie meetup said a 5 out of 10 reads like a failing grade, and a 5 out of 5 reads like a solid middle. So now I rate out of 5 and save the 1 star for stuff I would not finish. Has anyone else found that a smaller scale keeps people from taking low scores personally?
Switched to a 5 star scale after my friend gave me a 6 out of 10 on a movie night pick and I acted like he kicked my dog. Smaller scales really do save friendships, huh?
