Gave my nephew's Xbox game a 4/10 and he didn't talk to me for two days
My nephew handed me the controller last Saturday at my sister's place in Tucson and asked me to rate the game he'd been grinding for a month. I played about an hour, and honestly I'd give it a 4 out of 10, the combat felt stiff and the map was mostly empty. I told him that straight instead of hyping it up, and he went quiet and disappeared to his room for two days. My sister finally made us hash it out over tacos, and he admitted he mostly wanted me to say his taste was good. So how do you all handle rating something when the person who loves it is sitting right next to you?
Straight up, you tell the truth but you aim it at the effort, not the kid. Say the combat felt stiff to YOU, that's your taste, not a fact about the game. Then ask him what part he loves, because a month of grinding means something in there hooked him hard. That way you're not lying and he's not hearing "your taste is bad." Rating a thing out loud is easy, rating it in front of someone who built their whole week around it is a whole different game. Tacos fixed it this time, but next round just lead with curiosity before the score.
