Switched from foil to balayage 3 yrs ago and my back finally stopped screaming
So for like the first 5 yrs of doing color I was a foil highlight machine. Every client with blonde goals got the same 40 to 60 foils, same pattern, same everything. Took forever and my lower back was wrecked by Thursday every single time. Then about 3 yrs ago a stylist I used to work with at a salon over in Lakewood showed me how she was doing freehand painting on her blondes and I was like no way that holds up. Turns out it does, at least for a lot of my clients. Now I'm painting maybe 70 percent of my lightening clients instead of foiling them. My appts run shorter, my back doesn't hate me, and honestly the grow out is way softer. The catch is it eats product like crazy and you have to be way more careful with saturation. Also some clients still want that super uniform foil look and I get it. Anyway, curious if anyone else made this switch and how you handle the ones who want that old school solid blonde look. Do you just foil those or try to talk them into painting?
The part about the grow out being way softer really hits home. That's the thing I keep noticing with everything, the stuff that looks best long term is usually the stuff with a little mess built in, whether it's lawns or haircuts or even how people decorate their houses. The uniform foil look reminds me of that super manicured lawn that looks great for two weeks then turns into a patchy mess you have to fight all summer. Some clients want their lawn perfect though and that's their call, you just do the foils and tweak your chair height so your back survives it.
