Sat down with a perm rod box and a curling iron and had to pick one
Last Wednesday a client came in wanting big loose waves but her hair was straight as a board. I had to choose between using giant perm rods for a long set or just curling her whole head with a 1.5 inch iron. I went with the rods because she wanted it to last past one wash. Three hours later she walked out with perfect waves that held for two weeks. Has anyone else had that kind of gamble pay off with perms over heat styling?

...and that's why I'm glad I gave up trying to do my own hair at home after I accidentally dyed my bathroom sink pink trying to match a shade from a magazine. My sister's a cosmetologist so she talks about this stuff all the time with her clients. She says perms are like a trust fall with your hairdresser because you can't see the curl until it's too late. One time she did a perm on a lady who fell asleep in the chair and woke up with ringlets so tight she looked like a poodle for three months.

You know, I used to think perms were pretty straightforward. Just some rods and solution, how hard could it be? But your sister's story about the sleeping lady completely changed my mind. I always figured you could see the curl developing, but I never thought about the fact that you're basically committing to something you can't fully see until it's done. That trust fall analogy really hit home for me. I guess that's why I've always been too scared to try one myself, even though I've thought about it a few times over the years.
