Old-school perms still surprise me after 20 years

I tried a spiral perm on a client last Thursday, something I haven't done since beauty school in Portland. She had really thick hair and I used way too many rods, but it came out softer and bouncier than I expected. Learned that my old technique still holds up, but I need to charge more for the extra rod time, like $150 instead of $95. Has anyone else dusted off an old skill and been shocked it worked better than the modern stuff?

Old technique still holds up" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. You used way too many rods and it still worked, so maybe the modern stuff was never the problem, just the price. Isn't charging $150 for a perm that might not even be what the client asked for just guessing with extra steps?
