My mentor told me to stop using thinning shears on men's cuts and I fought him for months

My old boss at Great Clips in Phoenix kept telling me I was ruining my fade jobs by reaching for thinning shears every time. I thought he was being old school and closed minded. After about 6 months of stubbornly doing it my way I finally tried a full week with just clippers and shears. The difference was night and day. My blends got way cleaner and I stopped getting complaints about choppy layers. Has anyone else had a senior stylist give you advice that felt wrong but turned out to be the real deal?

That line about 'old school and closed minded' hits close to home. I argued with a barber for two months about his weird insistence on using a specific comb angle for fades. Turns out I was just the one being stubborn and wrong, not him being outdated.

TWO MONTHS?! Man that is DEDICATION to being wrong. I can't imagine going back to the same barber for two months with the exact same argument every time. That's a special kind of stubbornness right there. But hey, at least you finally saw the light instead of just switching barbers and pretending it never happened.
