My cousin taught me to braid hair on our porch swings. Now I do it for a living.

But is it really that deep? People get so caught up in the "my grandma taught me" stuff. A basic braid is a basic braid. It's like saying learning to hammer a nail means you're ready to build a house. Doing it for a living means dealing with a million different heads of hair, using all kinds of products, and having clients complain if it isn't perfect. That porch swing feeling doesn't pay the bills when a fancy fishtail braid falls apart in an hour.

But is it really just the basics that stick with you? I had to unlearn so much when I started doing braids for different hair types and textures, @val172. What works on your sister's fine hair falls apart on thick, curly hair... it's a whole different skill.

My grandma taught me on her back porch with my three sisters. Those basic braids from childhood really do stay with you.
