I finally got a handle on those tricky gray coverage requests

Lately, a lot more clients come in with resistant gray hair that just won't take color evenly. After some trial and error, I started prepping the hair with a clarifying wash and using a warmer base shade first, which solved the patchiness. How do you guys deal with stubborn gray areas when coloring?

Yeah that warming step is key. I do something similar on really dense gray patches around the temples, where the hair can feel almost wiry. I'll drop the developer down to 10 volume for that first base color, let it sit a full 30 minutes just on the most stubborn sections. It softens the cuticle up so the actual target color grips way better, no more of those weird light spots.

Sounds like a lot of work for some gray hair.

Pre-pigment with a gold filler first.
