Hot take: The '10 minute' scalp massage rule for color processing is a waste of time

Honestly, I see so many stylists at my salon in Austin still doing that long scalp massage when applying color, saying it helps with even saturation. Tbh, after timing it on over 50 clients last year, I found the extra time past the initial 2 minute application doesn't change the final result at all, it just makes the client's neck sore. Has anyone else actually tested this, or are we just doing it because we were taught to?

You said it doesn't change the final result, but that's only looking at color. The extra massage time is for the client's experience, not just saturation. It builds trust and makes them feel cared for, which is a big part of our job.

Disagree completely, @nina_harris39. That extra time is a waste if the color result is the same. Clients pay for a good color job, not a scalp rub. Most people just want to get in and out, not sit through extra minutes that add nothing to the look in the mirror. Building trust comes from doing the color right, not from hand-holding.

Check the color line, @oscarb71. That's where it matters.
