Had to choose between a $400 color analysis class or just trusting my eye for 10 years

I've been doing hair in Portland for about 6 years now and I always thought my color matching was solid, but a senior stylist at my salon told me I was missing undertones on brunettes. I signed up for a $400 hour-long color analysis class last month and honestly it made me question every formula I've done since 2018 lol. Anyone else ever dropped cash on a class that either totally changed their work or felt like a waste?

... and that's exactly why I dropped $350 on a color theory workshop from some Instagram artist last spring. I figured I knew enough, but she had us do this exercise with a bowl of M&Ms and a blank white wall to see how different shades of brown just disappear or pop depending on the light. It was honestly kind of wild how much I'd been ignoring the way your eye adjusts based on what's next to the color. Still not sure if it was worth the money, but I did stop matching brunettes the same way after that.

That M&M exercise actually sounds kind of brilliant for $350.

$350 is a lot for a color theory lesson you could get from a free YouTube video. A bowl of M&Ms and a blank wall isn't teaching you anything new about light or shade you couldn't figure out yourself. Sounds more like they just figured out a way to part people from their money.
