Had a lady ask for a 'surprise' color and then hated it...

This was at my old shop in Phoenix about two years back. A regular came in and said, 'Just do whatever you think is fun, I trust you!' So I gave her a really nice rose gold balayage... she looked in the mirror, went totally still, and said, 'Oh. I look like a shiny salmon.' She was dead serious. I had to redo the whole thing for free. Has anyone else had a 'surprise' request go that wrong?

My cousin told a barber to "surprise him" once. The guy gave him a full on mohawk with racing stripes shaved into the sides. He had to wear a beanie for two months straight. Some people just don't know what they're asking for.

That barber did exactly what was asked. "Surprise me" is a blank check for creativity. My buddy Dave said the same thing in Austin and got a perfect vintage flattop, looked amazing. The cousin got a memorable story and a lesson in clear communication. Sometimes the best haircuts come from trusting a pro's wild idea.
