Appreciation post: that $30 color correction class at the community college saved me from ruining a client's hair last Tuesday
The instructor showed us how to use a 5-volume developer to gently lift box dye without melting the hair off, and I honestly thought it was a waste of time until I had a walk-in with black dye on level 6 highlights who asked for caramel.

Had a similar scare last year with a client who had been using drugstore black box dye for years. She wanted to go to a warm chocolate brown and I was terrified of snapping her hair off. Remembered a tip from a $15 online course where they showed me how to do a strand test with coconut oil as a pre-treatment. It took three sessions but we got there without any breakage or weird colors. That class you took sounds way more legit than the random YouTube tutorials I was relying on before. Glad you dodged that bullet.

I mean, I gotta push back on this a little, @nelson.cameron. Strand tests with coconut oil are fine and all, but three sessions to get to a warm chocolate brown from black box dye? That sounds like overkill to me. I've seen plenty of stylists use a high-lift color remover with a bond multiplier (like Olaplex or similar) and get it done in one or two sittings tops, no breakage. Clients get antsy when you stretch it out that long, and honestly, the extra time and money isn't always practical for everyone. Sometimes the YouTube tutorials are quicker and work just as well, you know, as long as you test on a small section first.

@nelson.cameron, coconut oil as a pre-treatment is actually a decent idea for protecting hair, but it doesn't replace the need for a proper color remover with bond builders. The thing is, coconut oil can seal the cuticle and make it harder for the color remover to penetrate, which might be why it took three sessions. I'd say stick with a good bond multiplier like Olaplex or something similar and you can usually get it done in two, no need to drag it out that long.
