A senior client's punk rock mohawk taught me a big lesson

I always thought doing hair for older clients was just about neat cuts. Recently, I volunteered at a retirement home for a style day. One lady asked for a punk rock mohawk, which totally surprised me. The room burst into laughter, but she was serious. Her confidence with that bold style got me to think differently. Now, I always ask for style ideas, no matter the age. This has helped my work be more fun and personal.

Isn't it possible that for some people their style doesn't just stay the same, but actually gets more bold as they get older? The way I see it, sometimes hitting a later age gives folks a new kind of freedom to try things they wouldn't have dared to when they were younger and more worried about fitting in. That lady with the mohawk might have always wanted one but finally felt ready to own it. Or an older person might finally dye their hair bright purple because who's going to tell them no now. It's not always about clinging to a past self, but about becoming a new one.

People acting shocked that older folks have personal style always cracks me up. Like @riley363's tattoo guy, it's not a profound life lesson, it's just a person who never stopped liking cool stuff. We make a whole thing out of it when it's pretty simple.

Saw an older guy with a full sleeve tattoo at my gym last week. It totally shattered my dumb assumption about how people should dress at a certain age. Really makes you question all those little boxes we put people in.
