A client in Portland told me her gray hair was a 'surrender' and it really got to me
She was about 55, and during her color appointment, she said she was done covering her roots because she felt it meant giving up. I told her I saw it as a powerful choice, not a loss. That whole idea of gray hair meaning you've quit on yourself versus it being a bold style statement has stuck with me since. What's the most memorable thing a client has said about their own hair that changed how you see your work?

But what if she was right? Sometimes giving up a fight you're tired of is the most freeing choice a person can make.

Giving up a fight" is just strategic retreat rebranded.

Honestly, @ericb66 has a point about retreats. But calling gray hair a "surrender" misses that it's not a battle. It's just hair changing color. The memorable thing for me was a guy who shaved his head during chemo and called it "changing the uniform." That stuck with me. It's not about winning or losing, it's about picking your own look for the day you're having.
