Unpopular opinion: the walk-in who said 'just make it work' was the best client I've had in years
Had a guy come into the shop on a Tuesday with a 6 year old ThinkPad and a cracked hinge, and when I asked what he needed he said 'I don't care how it looks, just make it work.' I almost laughed because most people want the whole thing rebuilt for $40 and a promise. I told him the hinge bracket would run $22 in parts plus an hour of bench time and he didn't blink, just asked if the drive was still good. That part killed me, because here's a guy who cares about the machine lasting, not the plastic shell. Half the tickets I see come in are folks wanting a screen swap on a laptop that's already dead on the inside. So what do you do with a customer who actually gets it, do you pitch the upgrade or just fix the hinge and let them walk?
