TIL that using dead hard drives for training keeps a lot of tech out of the trash
In my repair shop, we save all the failed hard drives instead of throwing them away. We clean them up and use them to teach new guys how to do data recovery steps. This way, we don't need to buy extra parts for practice, and it cuts down on electronic waste. It's a simple fix that helps the planet and builds skills.

Cleaning up failed drives for training is exactly what we do too. We have new techs practice removing the platters without scratching them. It teaches patience and fine motor skills. Another good drill is swapping the controller board from a donor drive. That shows how delicate the connections are. This way, when they get a live recovery job, they've already made the mistakes on junk hardware.

Love using donor drives for exactly that reason. Like troygreen said, those messy failures on junk builds way more confidence than any perfect textbook demo ever could.

Oh yeah, that reminds me of when we tried something similar. We had a new guy practice on an old drive, and he accidentally snapped the read-write head arm because he rushed it. It was a mess, but he definitely learned to slow down and be more careful after that. I mean, those mistakes on junk hardware really do save you later on.
