Showerthought: I watched a tech at a shop in Reno reflow a laptop board and it made me rethink the whole swap vs fix thing
Stopped by a repair shop in Reno last month while dropping off a part and the owner was doing a reflow on a dead ThinkPad board right at the front counter. He had a cheap hot air station and a thermocouple taped to the chip, said he saves about 1 in 3 that way and charges $120 flat. I have been telling customers to just buy a refurb board for 2 years now, but watching him pull that off made me feel lazy. His point was that a reflow costs him 20 minutes and a board costs the customer $200 plus my labor. Anyone here actually getting long term results from reflows or is it just a stay of execution?
