Just lost $50 on a 'universal' laptop charger that fried a client's board
It was a cheap knockoff that shorted when I plugged it in. Anyone know a reliable brand for Dell power jacks that won't risk this?

Watched my buddy's shop deal with this exact mess last year. He grabbed a bargain bin universal charger for a Dell repair and it literally sparked when he connected it. Ended up costing him way more than fifty bucks to make it right with the customer. He swears by the Dell OEM power bricks now, even though they cost a bit more. Says the peace of mind is worth every penny after that scare.

Sounds like your buddy got a really bad one.

Man, don't those cheap bricks feel like a total trap? I had the same thing happen with a universal charger for an HP, a little puff of smoke right at the port. It turned a simple battery swap into a whole motherboard mess. Now I just hunt down the real OEM parts, even if I have to wait a few days for shipping. That fifty dollar lesson stings, but frying a client's machine is way worse, right?
