I finally stopped swapping parts on a hunch after a call in Billings last week
Last week I drove out to a small insurance office in Billings to look at a machine that kept rebooting every 40 minutes or so. The guy before me had already dropped $600 on a new power supply and a fresh set of RAM sticks, and the problem was still there. I sat down with a Kill-A-Watt and watched the draw for about an hour, and it never budged, which told me the box itself was fine. Turned out the outlet it was plugged into shared a circuit with a space heater that kicked on all afternoon. I moved the tower to the other wall, ran a 15 foot extension to a different breaker, and it has been up 9 days straight now. What gets me is how fast we all reach for the screwdriver instead of a $30 meter. How do you all decide when to stop swapping parts and actually test the power going in?
