Had a client bring in a PC that smelled like burnt popcorn for a solid week.

Took it apart. Found a dead mouse inside the power supply. Fried. Customer said they heard a 'pop' while gaming. Cleaned it out, replaced the PSU. Charged them $120 for the part and labor. Anyone ever find something that wasn't a computer part inside a tower?

The packing peanuts thing is wild... I've had a few machines come in with random crap inside but nothing that weird. Best advice I can give is to always check the bottom vents and any gaps near the PSU before you even plug it in, especially if the owner mentions a weird smell or noise. Stick your hand near the back fan and feel for airflow too, if it's blocked you'll know right away. Oh and never just blow it out with canned air if there's dead anything inside, you'll just atomize the mess and spread it everywhere. I learned that one the gross way with a roach situation... not fun.

Man, a dead mouse is rough. My buddy opened a really old desktop for a family member and it was packed with those foam packing peanuts, like someone just used the case as a trash can. They were all stuck to the fans and everything. He said it took him an hour to pick them all out by hand. I mean, how does that even happen? Just dumping your packing stuff into your computer tower.

Maybe they thought it was extra insulation for the computer.
