He told me he bricked three boards in one week doing updates through Windows instead of the built-in flash utility, which I'd been doing for years. Now I always boot into the UEFI shell first - anyone else skip the vendor tool and go straight to the command line for firmware?

Oh man, I gotta speak up here - the UEFI shell isn't really a command line in the way people think. It's more like a basic environment for running specific firmware commands, not a full CLI like DOS or Linux. I learned that the hard way when I tried to run some scripts on an old Gigabyte board and got nothing but errors. But yeah, you're totally right about skipping the Windows tools, those things are sketchy. I've seen Dell's update utility in Windows lock up mid-flash on a Latitude and turn it into a brick. The safest way is still booting into the UEFI and using the built-in update option from there, even if it's slower.

Yeah man same thing happened to me with an ASUS board, bricked it for a whole weekend.
