Spent $350 on a PMP prep course, got no job interviews from it
I signed up for a Project Management Professional prep class back in March because every job posting I saw wanted it. The course itself was fine, 35 hours of videos and practice tests, but I passed the exam and still couldn't get a callback for a junior PM role. I live in Cleveland, so I figured the local market would have some openings, but recruiters kept saying I lacked hands-on experience. Has anyone else dropped serious money on a certification that ended up being a doorstop on your resume? What actually got you past the HR filter instead?
Wow, $350 for a piece of paper that can't even get you a coffee chat with a recruiter, that's rough! The craziest part is that the PMP is supposedly this golden ticket and yet here you are with a fancy certificate and crickets from Cleveland employers. Here's the thing nobody tells you before you hand over your credit card, HR filters and hiring managers care way more about what you've actually done than what test you passed. They want to see you ran a project, dealt with a grumpy client, missed a deadline and fixed it, not that you watched 35 hours of videos and answered multiple choice questions. My honest tip is to stop leading with the cert on your resume and instead dig up any real work you did that looks like project management, even if your title was something else. Volunteer to run a small project at your current job or for a local nonprofit so you have actual stories to tell in interviews. The cert can help later once you're already in the door, but it will never be the thing that gets you through it on its own.
