Overheard my boss say I'm 'not ready' for a promotion - should I confront him or keep quiet?

I was grabbing coffee in the break room last Tuesday and caught my manager telling the HR rep that I'm "still building skills" for the senior analyst role I applied for 3 months ago. He didn't know I was around the corner, but I heard him say I need another year of project lead experience before they'll consider me. Has anyone else been in this spot where you hear something you weren't supposed to, and how did you handle it without making things awkward?

Wait, are we supposed to hide around corners at work just to find out the truth about our careers now? That's some real spy movie stuff, and you didn't even get a cool gadget out of it. Honestly though, if your boss thinks you need another year of lead experience, maybe just casually volunteer to lead the next project that comes up. That way you get your skills in front of him without making it weird that you were eavesdropping. He might even start seeing you as more ready before the 12 months are up.

Nah, but sometimes overhearing stuff gives you the real picture no one will say to your face.
