My new degree got me a pay cut instead of a raise

I went back to school last year for a marketing certificate while working full time at a logistics company. Spent $1,200 and 6 months of my nights on it. Thought it would bump me up to a better role or at least get me a raise. When I finished it my boss said they don't have a position that uses those skills right now. Now I am stuck in the same job making $18 an hour while my coworker who never went to school got a promotion because he showed up early every day. Has anyone else had a certificate or degree totally backfire like this?

Got a buddy who did a whole coding bootcamp, spent like $8,000, and his job just told him they don't need developers. He was stuck stocking shelves for another year before anyone hired him.

That certificate cost you $1,200 and six months of your life for nothing. Your boss basically told you it’s worthless right now. Meanwhile your coworker got ahead just by showing up on time. That stings because you did the “right” thing and got punished for it. Companies love to dangle promotions in front of you but then act surprised when you want a return on your investment. Have you thought about taking that certificate to a different company that might actually value it?

Honestly just shop that certificate around somewhere that knows its value.
