My high school shop teacher said learn a trade first, and 12 years later he was dead right
Mr. Kowalski told me in 2011 to get my welding cert at the tech school in Dayton before even thinking about a 4 year degree, and I laughed it off at 17. Got the cert anyway, been welding pipe ever since, and I paid off my truck 3 years before my cousin finished his bachelor's with $40k in loans. Anyone else have a teacher call it that early?
Wondering if anyone ever ran the actual numbers on this, because I did back in 2019 when my nephew was picking between trade school and a state school. The part people leave out is the overtime. Welders pulling 60 hour weeks on a pipeline make great money, but that is not a 40 hour job, and the wear on your body is real by the time you hit 45. My uncle was a boilermaker and had both knees replaced by 52. The degree path is slower to pay off, but you are not trading your shoulders and lungs for it. Mr. Kowalski was right about the money, just not the whole picture.
