My advisor told me to drop the internship, I filed anyway
Back in 2019 I met with my college advisor in Salt Lake City about a summer internship with a small nonprofit. She said it would look like a hobby on my resume and pushed me toward a corporate program instead. I thanked her and filed the nonprofit application anyway, took the $12 an hour role, and it's the only thing interviewers ask about since. Her advice was safe but it was built for a student who needed a big name, not for me. I think advisors mean well, but they lean on averages, not on the person sitting across the desk. Has anyone else ignored official career guidance and ended up better for it?
