I used to mock online certificates until I saw one get someone hired

I always figured those Google or Coursera certs were just expensive wallpaper. Then my coworker in Phoenix, no degree, finished the Google IT Support program in 4 months and got a help desk job at a hospital system, starting at $22 an hour. The hiring manager told me they specifically filter for that cert because it means the person can actually follow through. Has anyone else seen these certs open a door in a real job search?
