I thought paid certifications were a scam until my boss mentioned one

Spent 3 years avoiding CompTIA certs because I figured they were just money grabs. Then my manager said I'd get a $5k raise if I passed Security+ by the end of the quarter. Took the test, got the raise. Has anyone else had a company actually back up cert recommendations with cash?

Are you really sure it was the cert that got you the raise and not just your boss trying to make you look good? Honestly, a lot of employers throw around stuff like this to get you to jump through hoops, then they drag their feet on the actual money. I've seen it happen too many times where they promise a raise but find some excuse when the time comes. Plus, not every company even bothers to check if you passed it, they just say congrats and move on. So yeah, you got the cash this time, but don't bet your whole career on it. Ngl, it's still a gamble until you see the paycheck change.

Hang on a second... you're kinda right about companies dragging their feet but I got the raise before I even took the test, it was conditional on passing. My boss put it in writing so there wasn't any wiggle room. Just saying, sometimes the gamble pays off if you get the ink before the exam.
