I found a stat that says 40% of college grads work jobs that don't need a degree within 5 years
I was looking at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's data from 2024 and saw that about 40% of recent graduates are in jobs that don't require their degree. On one hand, that makes me think college is just a filter for employers, not real training. But on the other hand, maybe those jobs still pay better because of the degree, even if it's not directly needed. My buddy Joe graduated from Michigan State in 2020 with a marketing degree and now drives for UPS making $28 an hour, which is more than I make with my associate's. Does the degree actually matter if the paycheck is the same, or is it just a piece of paper?

Ask Joe if his UPS job actually needed that degree to get hired.

My cousin landed a biology degree from UC Santa Cruz and now manages a GameStop making $19 an hour. He says the degree helps him sound smarter when explaining why you don't need a warranty on a used Xbox controller. Honestly, that piece of paper might just be a pricey accessory for the resume pile.
