I dropped $2,400 on a data analytics bootcamp and it did nothing for me, but my $15 library card got me hired
Everybody in my circle keeps pushing those coding bootcamps as the fast track, and I fell for it back in 2022. I paid $2,400 for a 12 week data analytics program out of my own pocket since my job would not cover it, and all I got was a certificate that sits in a drawer and a Slack group that went silent two months after we finished. I sent out around 60 applications with that certificate on my resume and got maybe 3 callbacks, and two of those were for jobs that wanted 5 years of experience anyway. What actually got me my current analyst role was the free Excel and SQL classes I took through my local library in Columbus, plus a $15 used textbook I found at a library sale. The librarian there helped me set up a study schedule and even let me use the meeting room to practice with two other people who were also job hunting. I am not saying bootcamps are scams for everyone, but the price tag gets sold as the thing that makes you hirable when most of the time it is just you actually learning the material. Has anyone else paid for a program like this and felt like the free stuff did more for you?
