My bread knife shattered mid-loaf on Sunday morning
I was slicing a fresh sourdough around 7am and my old bread knife just snapped right at the handle. The blade flew across the kitchen and hit my fridge. Scared the crap out of me honestly. I had to dig little bits of ceramic out of the loaf for like 10 minutes. Ended up using a serrated steak knife to finish slicing which worked okay but not great. Now I'm looking for a new bread knife that won't explode on me. Anyone got a recommendation for one that holds up to dense crusts without breaking the bank?

Laughing but also crying because I had a Very similar thing happen with a cheap knife and a bagel. The blade didn't break but the handle just came off in my hand and the knife went flying. Now I only buy ones with a full tang, that solid metal piece that goes all the way through the handle. It's a small thing that keeps you from having to dig ceramic shards out of your Sunday breakfast.

Got a cheap ceramic knife once and tried to slice a bagel. Ended up with a handle in my hand and the blade stuck in the bagel like some kind of magic trick gone wrong. Spent the next five minutes carefully pulling ceramic slivers out of the cream cheese. Now I'm the guy at the store tapping knives on the counter to hear if they're full tang. I still buy cheap stuff sometimes but I learned my lesson about trusting a blade that's basically glued into its handle.
