Found out my oven was 50 degrees off for over a year

Was testing a new french bread recipe last Tuesday and couldn't figure out why the crust was coming out dark but the inside was still gummy. Borrowed a cheap oven thermometer from my neighbor Carol and turns out my oven runs 50 degrees cooler than what the dial says. Checked the manual online and there's a calibration screw behind the knob that I never knew existed. All those dense loaves and burnt edges make so much sense now. Anybody else ever check their actual oven temp versus the dial?

Did you ever check if your oven cycles hotter at the start before evening out? I found out mine does that and it throws off anything that bakes less than 20 minutes. That calibration screw is a game changer though, I adjusted mine last month and my cookies come out way more even now.

Yeah @the_finley, that initial heat spike is a nightmare for cookies. I started preheating a nonstick tray in there for 5 minutes before putting the dough on, fixed it right up.
