Cold butter vs room temp for laminated dough, huge difference

I spent last Saturday making croissants twice, once with butter straight from the fridge and once after letting it sit out for 20 minutes. The fridge butter made clean, sharp layers while the soft butter squished out and left a greasy mess on my counter. Has anyone else found that the butter temperature matters more than the dough itself when you're doing turns?
